Why I’m Taking a 2-Year Drawing Course (And You Should Too).
Hello Fellow Artists!
What is DrawABox? And Why Am I Talking About It?
DrawABox is a completely free course designed to teach the fundamentals of drawing. From my understanding, its primary goal is to provide a solid foundation in the basics of drawing. But what exactly are these fundamentals?
Confident and Controlled Mark Making: The ability to create intentional marks that are smooth and free of hesitation.
Attentive and Detailed Observation: Sharpening your ability to see and understand what you're drawing.
Spatial Reasoning: This is the core focus of the course. It’s about developing an instinctual understanding that, even though you're drawing on a flat surface, the objects you're creating exist in a three-dimensional space. The page is merely a window into that world.
These principles are directly from the course's website. If you’re interested in learning more, you can check it out here.
I believe this course will significantly improve my art based on what I’ve learned so far. Irshad Karim, the creator of DrawABox, introduces a concept called the "50% Rule." He emphasizes that the final result often gets in the way of true learning. We tend to focus too much on the finished drawing, but in reality, the end result is just one small part of the entire drawing process.
Personally, the finished drawing is what keeps me motivated and positive about my art. It gives me a sense of pride and makes me eager to share my work with others. That said, I’m not implying that I don’t enjoy the drawing process—I truly do. However, I agree with Irshad that I may be placing too much importance on the final product, and I’m curious to see how this mindset shift can enhance my skills.
This course isn’t particularly short—it can take students anywhere from 1 to 2 years to complete. While that might seem like a long time, remember that art is a lifelong journey. Spending a couple of years mastering the basics is a small investment in the grand scheme of things, and there’s always more to learn. I’m planning to take this course myself since it’s completely free and will undoubtedly be a significant boost to my artistic journey. I encourage you to consider it too if you’re serious about learning the fundamentals of art effectively and efficiently.
I’ll be sharing my experiences and insights from the course in future newsletters, so following along might be a great way to learn more about it without diving in yourself.
Looking forward to sharing more of my journey with you!
